Fresh air

Open spaces, secure communtities, clean water and fresh air are part of the expected daily life in McHenry County. Add in quality education systems, affordable housing and variety of seasons, McHenry County provides the business and resident opportunities lost in some parts of the world.

Proximity to Minot, ND allows accessibility to a variety of transportation including air and train. Highways 83 and 52 run parrell through our communties allowing quick automobile travel.

McHenry County is close proximity to five national wildlife refuges, boasting some of the best natural beauty in the state. Numerous wetlands and small lakes provide ample opportunity for bird and animal watching. The county also hosts part of the Central Dakota Birding Drive. Buffalo Lodge lake, north of Granville, is known for Northern Pike fishing in summer and winter.

Recreation is important and the county boasts a variety of seasonal activities, including two 9 hole golf courses, softball and baseball leagues and well kept parks for the entire family in every community.

Quality of place

The county boasts many facilities that add to quality of place, serving ages 1 to 100.

Day care facilities are available in every community, along with preschool and Headstart programs.

Schools, with active programming ranging from advanced science classes to vocational training to sporting programs, continue to be important to the people living in McHenry County.

A short distance away is Minot State University where the faculty and staff of Minot State University are devoted to helping the student. They provide the opportunity to gain broad and in-depth knowledge and effective critical thinking and communication skills through rigorous study, and strong and engaging learning experiences.

Several communities have active senior centers and Velva boasts a open and spacious assisted living center and nursing home. In 1977 the Souris Valley Care Center was built. The SVCC is a nonprofit organization located in the county of McHenry in Velva, North Dakota. The center is licensed as a long-term care facility, providing professional nursing care twenty-four hours a day. In 1999, an assisted living facility, consisting of sixteen two-bedroom apartments was built adjacent to the center.
